Alpaca fiber has made it to the top of the A-List with fashion and sport apparel designers. Alpaca yarn is more luxurious, softer, lighter, and warmer than cashmere, thanks to the longer fibers. Alpaca also pills less than cashmere and is hypoallergenic—not to mention more scarce.
Alpaca fiber is hollow, like a tiny straw. Because of this it retains heat by trapping warm air to keep you warm in even the coldest weather. These air pockets are what makes alpaca fiber super breathable, which is appreciated when worn in warmer temperatures. Alpaca fibers measure just 1/3rd of the weight of wool, Light, soft, durable, versatile, and beautiful are what make alpaca fiber ideal for knit and woven items,
Alpaca fiber is hypoallergenic. It does not contain lanolin, the oil in sheep wool that tends to make some people itchy. Alpaca fibers are naturally waterproof which is why alpacas do not need to produce lanolin oil at all. Items made from alpaca fiber are water and stain resistant.
Mt. Hoppe Farm uses animal-friendly handling and shearing techniques. Our pack o' pacas is shorn every spring. An adult alpaca can produce more than 15 pounds of fiber of which 6-7 pounds can be top tier-quality. The remaining fiber is graded second and third quality tier, All of the fiber gets used, for example the top tier fiber is spun into yarn and lower tier fiber is used for rugs.
Alpacas come in 16 distinct natural colors world wide and have more than 200 unique color tones. Traditional colors range from ivory white to fawn, deep browns, and blacks as well as swirling caramel.
The best reason to love alpacas is that they are always smiling.
